Using PileAXL Software for Eurocode 7 Design of Axially Loaded Single Piles

This blog highlights how PileAXL software simplifies the design of axially loaded piles by supporting multiple Eurocode 7 standards. With PileAXL, users can confidently apply Eurocode 7 for a range of projects, accommodating different national requirements and site conditions.

Users can specify the Eurocode 7 partial factors for pile axial capacity analysis by selecting the "Define Design Approach" option under the "Define" main menu, as shown in the figure below.

PileAXL supports the following Eurocode 7 codes, making it a versatile tool for geotechnical design:

  • Eurocode 7 – UK National Annex: Ensuring compliance with the specific requirements for projects in the United Kingdom.

  • Eurocode 7 – Malaysia National Annex: Addressing local conditions and regulations specific to Malaysia.

  • Eurocode 7 – Singapore National Annex: Tailored for the unique geotechnical needs and standards of Singapore.

  • Eurocode 7 – General Requirements: Covering broad, European-wide standards for pile design.

Eurocode 7 - UK National Annex

The figure below displays the input dialog for the various partial factors specified by Eurocode 7 – UK National Annex. The latest version of PileAXL implements Design Approach 1 (DA1) with combinations 1 and 2. As shown, the partial factors related to design resistance are fixed and cannot be modified by users, while load factors for both compression and tension design actions can be specified by users.

Eurocode 7 - Singapore National Annex

The figure below shows the input dialog for the factors used in the Eurocode 7 – Singapore National Annex. Similar to the UK National Annex design option, the factors related to design resistance and model factors are fixed and cannot be modified by users. However, users can specify the load factors for both compression and tension design actions, as well as indicate whether explicit SLS verification will be performed per code requirements. The program will automatically adjust the factors based on the user's selections.

Eurocode 7 - Malaysia National Annex

The figure below displays the input dialog for the factors used in the Eurocode 7 – Malaysia National Annex. Factors related to design resistance and model factors are fixed and cannot be modified by users. However, users can specify the load factors for both compression and tension design actions, as well as indicate whether explicit SLS verification should be performed according to code requirements. The program will automatically adjust the factors based on the user's selections.

Eurocode 7 - Others

The figure below displays the input dialog for the factors used in Eurocode 7 with general design requirements, not tied to any specific national annex. This flexible option allows users to adjust the various partial factors for design resistance and model factors. It is particularly useful for users who wish to perform designs based on Eurocode 7 standards that are not covered by the UK or Singapore National Annex.

Typical PileAXL Analysis Output

The figure below displays a typical PileAXL analysis output for a case where Eurocode 7 - Singapore National Annex is used.
